London Assembly
The London Assembly is elected every four years, at the same time as the Mayor.
The Assembly is required to conduct its business in public in accordance with Local Government Act requirements
Full Assembly sessions and committee meetings are open to the public, or they can be watched live via the internet: www.london.gov.uk
All records of meetings and papers submitted to the Assembly are made available to the public via the above website
The findings and recommendations of all Assembly investigations are also published on their website and available from the GLA on request
As well as the Full Assembly sessions, the Mayor and Assembly attend a twice yearly People’s Question Time meeting, at which the public are able to put questions to the Mayor and Assembly. The meetings are held in different locations around London and are open to all. You need to apply to the GLA for a ticket to secure a place.
Suggest a question to the London Assembly
London Assembly Members question the Mayor, in public, in order to hold him to account. There are 10 Mayor's Question Time meetings every year. These are, roughly, monthly but not usually held in April and August.
Questions cover the full range of the Greater London Authority's duties (police, fire service, regeneration and transport) and can range beyond into almost any issue of concern to London. Questions need to be relevant and topical.
Only Assembly Members can put questions to the Mayor at a Mayor's Question Time, but you can suggest a question to be asked by emailing: suggestaquestion@london.gov.uk
State whether you would like your question to be forwarded to a particular Assembly Member or to a political group (Conservative, Green, Labour, Liberal Democrat). Also provide your name and address. This information will not be made public but will be provided to the relevant Assembly Member and is required in order for your suggested question to be taken forward.
Single, hard-hitting questions are best. If you are asking about something complex, try to reduce it to a few clear questions.
If you do not specify a Member or a party your question will be referred to the Chair of the London Assembly.
Attending meetings
You are welcome to attend Assembly meetings, which are all open to the public.
At Committee meetings, you will hear Assembly Members question experts as they gather material for an investigation.
At Mayor’s Question Time, the whole Assembly questions the Mayor on a wide range of issues affecting Londoners. Assembly members encourage members of the public to come and listen to the debate. Meetings begin at 10am unless stated otherwise and take place at City Hall, The Queen's Walk, London SE1 2AA (near Tower Bridge ).
A list of forthcoming meetings is available on the meetings page on the GLA’s website: www.london.gov.uk/assembly_meetings.jsp
Agendas are made available on the same webpage a few days before meetings.
Petitions
If you are organising a petition, you should ensure that every printed sheet includes the petition’s formal request and the name, address and signature of each petitioner.
Petitions organised on the internet should give petitioners’ names and email addresses and demonstrate that the petitioners knew what the formal request of the petition was.
You can ask an Assembly Member to forward a petition to the Mayor, or a relevant organisation on your behalf. The Member may then present the petition to a meeting of the full Assembly where Members can vote on whether to forward it with a request for a response.
Any response received will be reported to the Assembly and passed to the petition organiser.
Scrutiny Managers
The London Assembly's work is organised according to subject area, with one or more scrutiny managers for each.
If for example you are interested in scrutiny of the Mayor's Planning Decisions, the name of the scrutiny manager responsible is given under the 'Planning and Housing' heading.
