European Union

European Union

The UK joined the European Economic Community in 1973, which became the European Union in 1992. Most decisions are taken by the Council of Ministers which is made up of the governments of all the Member States.

The European Commission proposes new laws and oversees their implementation by Member States. Laws of the European Union are overseen by the European Court of Justice. The Parliament of the European Union has responsibilities for scrutinising proposals for new European laws. MEPs also approve the appointment of the European Commission, decide the EU budget with the member states, monitor spending, approve international agreements, question EU Commissioners and national Ministers, and appoint the European Ombudsman. Citizens have the right to petition the European Parliament.

London is represented in the European Parliament by eight MEPs.
The London region comprises the 74 Westminster Parliamentary Constituencies in the Greater London area.

MEPs work in a similar way to national MPs. Elections to the European Parliament are held every five years by region, and seats distributed according to the proportion of votes won by each party, which put up a list of candidates. The following MEPs were elected in 2009 to represent London.
