Metropolitan Police Authority

The Metropolitan Police Authority is an arm of GLA. The London Mayor sets the annual budget of the Police and Fire Authorities. They are independent bodies, but the Mayor appoints some members of the Police Authority, following nominations by the London Assembly. He also appoints the Fire Authority, following nominations by the London Assembly and London boroughs. Their policies must conform with the Mayor’s London Plan, as well as national targets set by the Government. For more information on the London Mayor and the Assembly see our section on the Greater London Authority (GLA)

The Metropolitan Police Authority’s (MPA) mission is to secure an effective, efficient and fair police service for London’s communities. Members of the Authority scrutinise and support the work of the
Metropolitan Police Service (MPS). Some of the issues which the Authority investigates include gun crime, stop and search, and rape investigation and victim care. The Authority also chairs and runs the London-wide Race Hate Crime Forum.

The Metropolitan Police Authority has 23 members, 12 drawn from the London Assembly, 4 magistrates and 7 independent members. Members are appointed for a period of 4 years.

Why might I contact the MPA?

If you feel that you have been unfairly treated by the police you can go to the MPA to investigate. For example, if you are stopped and searched and think that it was not carried out in a proper fashion you can ask the MPA to investigate.
