Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA)

Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA)

Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA)

The HFEA’s principal tasks are to:

  • license and monitor clinics that carry out in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and donor insemination
  • license and monitor research centres undertaking human embryo research
  • regulate the storage of gametes and embryos.

The members of the Authority are appointed by the Secretary of State for Health. HFEA Members bring to the HFEA a broad range of expertise, including medicine, law, religion and philosophy. The Authority makes decisions about moral and ethical issues, and it is important that people from all communities can influence this process. They carry out regular consultation with the public.
