Human Genetics Commission

The Human Genetics Commission’s role is to analyse current and potential developments in human genetics and advise Ministers on their likely impact on human health and healthcare and their social, ethical, legal and economic implications. The Commission also advises on priorities in research and the delivery of genetic services by the NHS. Importantly, the Commission is also charged with developing and implementing a strategy to involve and consult the public and other stakeholders and encourage debate on the development and use of human genetic technologies and advise on ways of increasing public knowledge and understanding.

The Commission has established a 100-strong Consultative Panel, comprising people with direct experience of living with genetic disorders. The Panel acts as a sounding board and informs the work of the Commission, as well as giving insights into their concerns about genetic issues.
