Further Education (FE) Colleges
Further Education may be at any level above compulsory education, from basic training to Higher National Diploma or Foundation Degree. A distinction is usually made between FE and Higher Education (HE) which is education at a higher level than secondary school, usually provided in distinct institutions such as universities.
FE in the UK therefore includes education for people over 16, usually excluding universities. It is primarily taught in FE colleges, work-based learning, and adult and community learning institutions. This includes post-16 courses similar to those taught at schools and sub-degree courses similar to those taught at higher education (HE) colleges and in some universities.
Over 50% of adults studying in further education come from black and minority ethnic groups. Colleges are run by a board of governors, similar to those that run schools. They appoint the college principal, and have overall strategic, financial and legal responsibility for their college. Governor posts are voluntary. Colleges seek a range of business and education experience from governors, but any members of the public with relevant skills and an interest in the success of a college can apply to become a governor.
